The government says it will wipe out the country’s school infrastructure deficit by 2029 through a US$600 million programme to build at least 1,350 new schools.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo revealed the plan during a visit to Chikomba District, saying the funding will accelerate efforts to bring schools closer to communities, particularly in rural and farming areas where children walk long distances due to a lack of nearby schools.

“We now have access to funding that exceeds US$600 million, which we are going to spend on the construction of at least 1,350 schools starting in November 2026,” he said.

Moyo said the target is to close the gap within the next three years.

“By 2029, in line with the President’s vision, the deficit will be zero. No one will be walking more than five kilometres to school,” he said.

He said Chikomba District will benefit from at least five new schools from next year.

“Come next year, we will build not less than five new schools here,” he said.

The minister did not disclose the source of the funding, whether it is already available, or whether it will come from Treasury or development partners.
