Czechia would send two brigades in event of Russian attack on Baltics, PM says

Czechia would send two mechanised brigades in case of a Russian attack against the Baltic states, the country’s Prime Minister Andrej Babiš told a local news website on Tuesday.

"Of course we are preparing. If, God forbid, Russia were to attack a Baltic state, then, under Article 5, we have to send two of our mechanised brigades," he said.

Babis’ government, which includes a pro-Russian anti-immigrant party, previously halted Czech contributions to military aid for Ukraine, Reuters reported.

He was also previously criticised for saying he would not send Czech soldiers to fight for allies, according to Reuters.

"The fact we do not talk about it and journalists don't get fodder for their articles does not mean we don't address it," Babis said. "Of course we would be active and we talk about it, but I don't see a reason to share classified information."

There have been repeated warnings voiced by European leaders, as well as security services, about a potential Russian attack.

Baltic leaders, however, have played down fears of military action by Moscow, instead saying the Kremlin is intensifying its sabotage and disinformation campaign against Europe.
