He added that people may still be trapped beneath the rubble but emergency crews are continuing search-and-rescue operations at the site.
According to the president, five people had been confirmed dead in Pryluky as of Wednesday morning. Among the 26 injured were five children.
“The rescuers are working continuously at the site – doing everything possible to find every person,” he said.
The casualty figures remain preliminary as crews continue searching through the wreckage.
Zelensky did not immediately provide details about the type of missile that struck the building or the condition of those wounded.
The attack on Pryluky was part of a massive overnight Russian barrage targeting Kyiv and 12 Ukrainian regions.
According to Zelensky, five apartment buildings were damaged in Dnipro, while another four high-rises were hit in Kremenchuk. Two people were killed and eight wounded in strikes affecting the two cities.
A Russian drone also damaged an apartment building in Zaporizhzhia.
In Kyiv, Russian forces killed two people, while another two were killed in Oleksandriia in the Kirovohrad region.
Taken together with the five deaths in Pryluky, the figures provided by Zelensky indicate that at least 11 people were killed across Ukraine during the attack.
Multiple explosions had rocked Kyiv early on Wednesday , hours after Zelensky warned that Ukrainian intelligence had detected Russian preparations for a massive strike.
Damage was reported in the capital’s Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Darnytskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts. Warehouses and other non-residential facilities were among the sites hit.
Zelensky said Russia used a total of 70 missiles, alongside Shahed-type drones, during what he described as “one of the most treacherous attacks.”
The missile barrage included a significant number of ballistic weapons with Ukrainian air defenses managing to intercept only part of the attack.
One of Russia’s principal targets was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as Moscow intensifies efforts to damage the country’s power system ahead of the winter season.
“The Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively,” Zelensky said.
The president described Russian ballistic missiles as Ukraine’s most difficult air defense challenge and renewed his appeal to partner countries for additional Patriot systems and interceptors.
“Air defense packages are now a vital necessity for us,” Zelensky said. “That is why we search every day for missiles for the Patriots, which can and must genuinely protect people’s lives here, in Ukrainian skies.”
