Mother of one poses as officer, marries Punjab AAP leader, flees with gold and cash
A local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in Punjab's Fatehgarh Sahib was in for an utter shock after he discovered that his newly-wed wife was already married and had a daughter. The woman was reportedly presented to him by the bride's family as a PCS officer, according to a complaint filed with the police. The accused not only duped Amrinder Singh, Chairman of the Sirhind Market Committee and a Block Samiti member, but also ran away with cash and jewellery, police said. Police have registered a case against six people, including the woman, and launched an investigation.
According to the complaint, Amrinder Singh, a resident of Mandofal village, married Manvinder Kaur on February 10, 2026. He alleged that before the marriage, Kaur was portrayed to him and his family as unmarried and working as a PCS officer. The marriage was subsequently solemnised on the basis of the information provided to him. However, Singh said he became suspicious after the wedding and began looking into Kaur’s background.
During the inquiry, he allegedly discovered that she had previously been divorced and had a child. He also claimed that she did not hold any government post and had never served as a PCS officer. The complainant has alleged that the information about Kaur’s identity, marital history and professional status was deliberately concealed as part of a conspiracy to facilitate the marriage. He further alleged that forged documents were prepared to obtain a birth certificate covering the period from 1980 to 1992, while her Aadhaar and PAN records were also allegedly altered. The matter came to the attention of the Fatehgarh Sahib police following Singh’s complaint.
Fatehgarh Sahib SHO Rupinder Singh said that after examining the allegations, a case was registered against six individuals. Those named in the case include Manvinder Kaur, her brother Tarlochan Singh, mother Amarjit Kaur, cousin Narendra Singh, sister-in-law Barupinder Kaur and former Sarpanch Sukhmander Singh Rana of Sursingh village in Tarn Taran district. Police said no arrests had been made so far and the investigation was continuing. Fatehgarh Sahib DSP Kulbir Singh Sandhu said the complaint was submitted by Amrinder Singh, son of Balinder Singh of Mandofal village. According to the complaint, the accused woman allegedly used forged documents and misrepresented herself as a PCS officer before marrying Singh. The complainant has also alleged that after leaving the matrimonial home, Kaur took away some gold and other belongings.
These allegations are also part of the police investigation, officials said. The case has raised questions over the alleged use of forged identity and personal documents to conceal an individual’s background before marriage. Police are now examining the documents cited in the complaint, the circumstances surrounding the alleged misrepresentation and the roles of the other accused named in the case.- EndsInputs by Gurdeep Singh
