Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over allegations that women journalists were sexually harassed by police personnel while covering a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.She asked why they were not taking note of the matter. Her remarks came after three women journalists alleged sexual harassment by police personnel during the October 3 protest.Delhi Police said the complaints had been transferred to the Crime Branch for a fair and impartial enquiry, while the Press Council of India expressed shock and dismay over the treatment of journalists and urged immediate action.In a post in Hindi on X, Priyanka Gandhi said women journalists had accused police personnel of sexual harassment while reporting from Jantar Mantar.She said that despite protests by dozens of journalists, neither was an FIR registered nor was any concrete action taken.
She also said the women, who were protesting peacefully, had alleged that the police were behaving very rudely towards them.She said women felt threatened by the very police force whose duty was to provide security. From college students to journalists, women everywhere were facing a lack of safety, the Congress general secretary said." Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji, is this treatment of women appropriate? If not, why do you not take cognizance of this?"
Priyanka Gandhi said.On Saturday, one of the women journalists told PTI that an assistant commissioner of police had allegedly sexually assaulted her.An officer said the New Delhi district police had received complaints over the alleged incidents during the protest, when police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.The officer said the district police had transferred the complaints to the Crime Branch for a fair and impartial enquiry.The Crime Branch will examine the allegations and record statements of the complainants and other persons concerned as part of the enquiry.- Ends(With PTI inputs)
