Delhi Police Fortify Nirvachan Sadan Amid Protests by Opposition MPs Over SIR
Tensions escalated in central Delhi as leaders and Members of Parliament from the opposition united to march towards the Election Commission of India headquarters, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest march, featuring prominent leaders alongside nearly 150 MPs, was halted near Akashvani Bhavan by security forces. Heavy barricading was enforced across Lutyens' Delhi, with personnel from the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force deployed in large numbers with tear gas to prevent demonstrators from advancing.
Opposition members accused the poll body of bias and raised serious questions regarding voter roll revisions, Form 6 changes, and alleged electoral irregularities, calling the protest an effort to defend democracy and constitutional rights. In response, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the demonstration, terming the allegations unfounded and accusing the opposition of attacking constitutional institutions while attempting to create political perception and anarchy after facing electoral setbacks.
