'Windows damaged, objects set on fire': Video shows private university students in Punjab hold protest over unverified rape report
The students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab carried out a massive protest in the wee hours of Sunday following unverified reports on social media about the alleged rape of a female student. There are several visuals on social media that capture students going rampage by damaging window panes, flower pots and even putting some objects on fire. Further, students also blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara national highway.

While the streets were full of agitated students who joined the protest over 'rumours' of rape of a female student on the campus, the police expressed unawareness about the incident.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kapurthula, Gaurav Toora told media that the police received information about student the LPU campus matter at 1:45 am.
"When we reached here, we came to know that there were rumours. Because of the rumours, students gathered here...We spoke to students who had some issues with the LPU administration. We heard them and are trying to get them resolved. The situation is completely under control," the SSP said.

This is not the first such incident. It comes only a day after students of Chitkara University in Patiala held a protest and also allegedly damaged a police vehicle over unverified claims about two female students' suicide on the campus.
The administration of Chitkara University, located near Rajpura in Patiala, has however denied any suicide incident and asked the students not to pay heed to rumours.
