Global energy situation remains challenging amid West Asia conflict: Hardeep Singh Puri

Kolkata: India has so far successfully navigated the disruptions caused in oil and gas supplies due to the West Asia conflict, but the global energy situation remains challenging, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday.

“India is no longer merely participating in the global energy conversation, we are increasingly helping shape it,” Puri said at a curtain-raiser event on India Energy Week 2027.

Referring to the disruptions caused in the global supply chain due to the US-Israel-Iran conflict, Puri said India navigated the crisis due to proactive actions taken by the government.

The minister claimed that there was no shortage of oil at any petrol pump in the country despite the disruptions in the global supplies.

Puri said India’s energy choices have implications well beyond its borders, making the country a centre of the global energy conversation.

He said the India Energy Week 2027 will build on this context, focusing on the technologies, innovations and partnerships required to ensure energy security, affordability and sustainability for the globe, especially countries in the global South.

The fifth edition of India Energy Week will be held in Kolkata from January 28-31 under the theme “Unlocking Innovation. Securing Energy. Shaping Tomorrow”.

“With energy security, affordability, technology, investment and sustainability increasingly interconnected, IEW 2027 promises to catalyse global efforts to find practical solutions to the challenges shaping the sector,” as per a statement released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

“The exhibition and conference programmes will showcase developments across oil and gas, LNG, refining and petrochemicals, hydrogen, biofuels, digitalisation and AI, alongside other emerging areas within the energy sector,” it said.

The first edition of India Energy Week was held in Bengaluru in 2023. In the fourth edition held in Goa in January this year, over 75,000 energy professionals and more than 700 exhibiting companies participated. The Goa event witnessed participation from over 120 countries.

The fifth edition is expected to bring together 75,000+ energy professionals and 700+ international exhibitors, alongside the decision-makers in the energy domain, the ministry said.

“The exhibition and conference programmes will provide opportunities to showcase technologies, forge partnerships and explore the strategic opportunities and challenges shaping the energy sector,” it said.

The international character of India Energy Week has also grown alongside its scale. Previous editions have brought together senior government leaders and energy executives from major energy-producing and consuming economies.

Seventeen ministers and deputy ministers from countries including UAE, Canada, Netherlands, Oman, Brunei, Myanmar, Tanzania participated in IEW 2026, along with International organisations such as the International Energy Forum, BIMSTEC and the Eurasian Economic Union.
