‘The necessary conditions were not fully established’ - Carlos Queiroz on Ghana exit

Carlos Queiroz has admitted that the “necessary conditions were not fully established” during his time with the Black Stars as he confirmed the end of his latest spell as Ghana head coach.

Carlos Queiroz has admitted that the “necessary conditions were not fully established” during his time with the Black Stars as he confirmed the end of his latest spell as Ghana head coach.

Queiroz made the admission in an emotional goodbye message following the termination of his professional relationship with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after just seven matches in charge.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said.

The Portuguese coach's record ended with one win, two draws and four defeats from seven matches. Ghana scored five goals and conceded 10 during that period, with the latest setback coming in the Black Stars’ 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra.

Queiroz returned to the Black Stars in September after initially leaving the position following Ghana's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. His first spell included a win over Panama, draws against Wales and England, and defeats to Croatia and Colombia. He then returned for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, losing to Côte d’Ivoire before the defeat to The Gambia.

In his farewell message, Queiroz also thanked the GFA and its president, Kurt Okraku, for the opportunity to lead Ghana.

“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its President for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation.”

Queiroz said he arrived with the intention of helping build a stronger future for the national team and developing Ghanaian talent, but acknowledged that the circumstances did not allow that ambition to be fully realised.

“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.

“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride.”

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen who will be appointed as Queiroz's replacement.
